TULSA, Okla. — Two “Idle No More” demonstrations in Tulsa, Okla., and Wetumpka, Ala., to protest casino development on a Muscogee (Creek) ceremonial ground that is considered sacred to many tribal members are set for Jan. 26.
Native speakers and dancers will be featured at the Tulsa event, which will be held from 3 – 6 p.m., at the Tulsa Creek Indian Community Center. A free meal will also be served. A powwow featuring the Southern Singers drum group will begin at 3:30 p.m., followed by a press conference at 4:30 p.m. Everyone is welcome to attend and participate.
A simultaneous rally is planned in Wetumpka, Ala., by activists and members of the Poarch Band of Creek Indians opposed to the development of the land in Wetumpka known as “Hickory Ground,” which was the last capital of the Muscogee (Creek) Nation (MCN) prior to its forced removal from Alabama to Oklahoma in 1830 by the federal government.
Protestors claim the Poarch Band of Creek Indians excavated approximately 57 Muscogee (Creek) graves from a ceremonial ground at Hickory Ground to develop a casino that is currently under construction.
The Inter-Tribal Council of the Five Civilized Tribes, which includes the Chickasaw, Choctaw, Cherokee, Muscogee (Creek) and Seminole Nations, unanimously adopted a resolution supporting efforts to halt the desecration of Hickory Ground Oct. 12, 2012.
MCN and Hickory Ground ceremonial ground filed a federal lawsuit in the U.S. District Court for the Middle District of Alabama to stop the casino development Dec. 12, 2012. The lawsuit alleges that the excavation of MCN human remains and funerary objects from Hickory Ground violated the Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act (NAGPRA) and other federal laws.
Idle No More is a grassroots indigenous rights movement that originated in Canada and spread internationally via social media. Activists supporting the preservation of Hickory Ground have participated in Idle No More demonstrations in Shawnee and Tulsa, Okla.
The Tulsa Creek Indian Community Center is located at 8611 S. Union Ave., in Tulsa, Okla. For more information please visit www.SaveHickoryGround.org. Updates will be posted on Facebook at www.facebook.com/SaveHickoryGround and on Twitter @Hickory_Ground.

IDLE NO MORE OKLAHOMA! ONE VOICE – ONE FIRE – ONE SPIRIT
“This has nothing to do with race or ethnicity. Native people did begin this movement—energized by Chief Spence’s sacrifice and sparked by the Four Founders’ initiative. Yet this movement belongs to anybody who wants to stand up for the Earth and women and also make a positive change in the community. That means that non-Natives are certainly welcome. We need non-Natives involved to save this Earth, to give our children and grandchildren the same quality of life that we have enjoyed. It’s about clean water. It’s about clean air. It’s about safety for all women. It’s about making a positive change in our communities. Critics seem to be so caught up on race; yet even racists want their children to have clean water just like non-racists. Right? Well, we want racists (and NON-racists, of course) to have kids with clean water too. Oh, and we don’t want them to get raped or beaten either.”
