The 14th Annual Native American Music Awards that was scheduled for Friday, Nov. 30, at Seneca Niagara Events Center in Niagara Falls, New York, has been rescheduled for Friday, May 10, 2013, due to Hurricane Sandy.
The show organizers tragically lost their home due to Hurricane Sandy and had initially tried to keep the original date before deciding to postpone the show. “I am most grateful for Seneca Niagara Casino’s understanding and support, and their efforts to ensure the awards show continuation by providing a postponement date,” said Ellen Bello, president and founder, Native American Music Association (NAMA). “I am also deeply touched by the outpouring of support and love from our artist community. Mother Earth has presented us with an extremely challenging time for me and my family as well as many other coastal communities throughout New York and New Jersey, but we will rebuild and prevail.”
Several recording artists claiming Creek heritage submitted music to the 14th Annual Native American Music Awards. At least four different acts with Creek lineage entered music in fourteen categories such as Blues, Country, Rap/Hip-Hop and Rock.
Local band, The Joint Effect, featuring musicians from Okmulgee County, OK, submitted their debut album The Joint Effect. According to the band\’s website at www.thejointeffect.org, The Joint Effect submitted their debut album to the 14th Annual Native American Music Awards in June of 2012. The band is awaiting the announcement of the 2012 Nominees. Categories entered into by the band were Best Rock, Debut Duo or Group, Songwriter of the Year, Single of the Year and Native Heart for bassist David Miller’s contribution on the album.
The Joint Effect features enrolled members of the Muscogee (Creek) Nation Eddie Mouss and John Holata. According to guitarist and vocalist of The Joint Effect John Holata, he is \”Very excited to be apart of the Nammy\’s this year! It would be a great honor to be acknowledged by our peers.\”
As with previous awards shows, voting for your favorite artists will be allowed via Internet when voting resumes next year. To be eligible for a NAMMY nomination in 2012, artists had to release their CD between January 1, 2012, and April 1, 2012. The first official Native American music initiative of this magnitude, the Native American Music Awards was founded and incorporated in 1998.
According to the NAMA website, \”the Native American Music Awards was created as a method to provide Native Music and it\’s artists its proper respect on a national level and prove that there is a viable and professional mainstream industry.\”
Music from all recording artists is featured on the NAMA website at www.nativeamericanmusicawards.com. A list of the Creek recording artists and their submission categories are listed below. Due to Hurricane Sandy, NAMA had to postpone the award nominations until 2013.
